Memories of Memories. Das Lager Oradour – Das Unsichtbare sichtbar
machen
What remains of history? Who remembers what? And how? How can and should we deal with the gaps in history? What role can art play in making these gaps visible? Based on the forced labor camp in Schwaz, which continued to operate in the post-war period under the name "Lager Oradour" as a denazification camp, the installation "Memories of Memories" in front of the Ferdinandeum explored themes of remembering and forgetting associated with this camp. The exhibition featured works by Arno Gisinger, Christine Ljubanovic, and Gaston Paris, addressing the influence of collective and individual memories into the present day and the attempt to make what has been forgotten visible again. This lecture describes the genesis of the project and questions how, and if, such projects have the potential to leave lasting marks on collective memory.
