Book Presentation
Felicitas Heimann-Jelinek and Daniela Schmid present their new book: "'Eine Krone mit verschiedenen Verzierungen samt Glöckl und Steinen'
Judaica-Sammlungen in Österreich".
The origins of Judaica collections in Austria date back to the second half of the 19th century. Is it due to their complex nature that they have nevertheless rarely been recognized by the broader public? After all, they oscillate between objects of Jewish religious practice and artistic creations, between Jewish self-representation and external perception. As self-representations, they are expressions of self-confidence and self-assurance; as external perceptions, they document one of many minorities. Their fates after 1938 influence the reception of historical Judaica holdings and allow institutional as well as private collections to be viewed from a contemporary historical perspective.
